Asthma Outside the Hospital (2hrs)

Learn how to manage asthma in a non-clinical environment. Topics include; understanding what happens during an asthma episode, asthma warning symptoms and triggers, quick relief medication and daily preventative medication differences, basic inhaler techniques or nebulizer use, and simple changes a family can do in the home to help eliminate asthma triggers.

 

Auxiliary Home Care Equipment (4hrs)

Learn about portable and stationary suction machines, suction technique, suction accessories, heated-humidity systems, resuscitation bags, oxygen systems, apnea monitors, and pulse oximeters used in the home environment.

 

Bilevel/CPAP Systems (2hrs)

Learn the parts, pieces, tubing circuits, batteries, alarms and settings of a Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) system and a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) system. You will have hands-on time for assembling a tubing circuit, setting "ordered parameters", and troubleshooting basic system operation.

 

Bronchial Drainage (1hr)

Learn about the benefits, risks, techniques and proper torso positions for bronchial drainage. Treatments will be demonstrated and discussed.

 

Caring for an Implanted Port (1hr)

Learn the anatomy of an infusion port and the proper techniques needed to access, de-access and troubleshoot an implanted infusion port. Hands on learning and practice time are included.

 

Continuous Flow for the LP-10 Ventilator (1hr)

Learn how to add a bias flow system to the LP-10 ventilator. This system is primarily used on pediatric patients that have not yet converted to the other ventilator (T-bird or Pulmonetic) options.

 

CPR Recertification for the Health Care Provider (3hrs, $75)

Learn infant, child, adult, 1 and 2 person, obstructed airway, Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) and proper use of a resuscitation bag. After the successful completion of this class, the American Heart Association, Healthcare Provider BLS certification will be awarded. Certification is good for two years.

 

Drawing a Blood Specimen (2hrs)

Learn about the anatomy of the venous system, equipment, and safety and infection control practices used in Phlebotomy (the act of drawing a blood specimen). Class time includes demonstrations on drawing blood from a peripheral vein, central venous access devices, and capillary system (finger/heel stick). Complications that may result from a blood draw and how to handle them will also be discussed.

 

Infusion Therapy Basics (3hrs)

Using the most current Infusion Nursing Society (INS) Standards of Practice, common infusion therapy topics are reviewed. For example; basic venous anatomy, peripheral venous catheter placement, common IV therapies, methods of delivery, complications and troubleshooting venous catheters. Hands-on time will be available to practice venous catheter dressing changes.

 

IV Home Care Documentation and Legal Issues (1hr)

Learn how to properly document an infusion therapy home care visit. This includes the basic information required for a patient's medical record, tips for improving your documentation, understanding the current Standards of Practice and the MN Nurse Practice Act. Legal issues in infusion therapy nursing and ways to prevent malpractice will be discussed.

 

LP-10 Ventilator (2hrs)

Learn the various parts, pieces, tubing circuits, batteries, alarms and settings of the LP-10 ventilator. You will have hands-on opportunity to assemble a tubing circuit, set “ordered parameters”, and troubleshoot basic ventilator operation.

 

Pediatric Assessment (2hrs)

We will review age-specific stages of pediatric growth and development and perform a well-child physical assessment. You will learn how to identify normal ranges for blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, respirations, and other common laboratory values. Other topics include reviewing the signs/symptoms of pertinent pediatric disease processes as well as identifying signs/symptoms of child abuse and appropriate interventions to take.

 

Pulmonetic LTV-950 & 800 Ventilators (3hrs)

Learn the parts, pieces, tubing circuits, batteries, alarms and parameter settings of the Pulmonetic LTV-950 and LTV-800 ventilators. You will have hands-on time for assembling a tubing circuit, setting 'ordered parameters' and troubleshooting basic ventilator operation.

 

Respiratory Assessment with Breath Sounds (2hrs)

Learn the how and why of breathing. You will review basic lung sounds, proper charting techniques, and participate in clinical case simulations.

 

Safety and Infection Control in Infusion Therapy (1hr)

Learn how to safely and comfortably use infection control practices while caring for your patients. The most current recommendations and standards will be used from; the CDC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and the Infusion Nurses Society.

 

Starting a Peripheral IV (2hrs)

Learn how to start a peripheral IV. Topics covered are: venous system anatomy, identifying and finding a vein, selecting a proper access device, and venipuncture techniques. There will be time for hands-on practice for starting a peripheral IV.

 

T-Bird Ventilator (2hrs)

Learn the parts, pieces, tubing circuits, batteries, alarms and settings of the T-Bird Legacy ventilator. You will have hands-on time for assembling a tubing circuit, setting "ordered parameters", and troubleshooting basic ventilator operation.

 

TPN Therapy & the Curlin® Infusion Pump (1hr)

Learn the indications for use, side effects, special precautions, contraindications and complications of Total Parenteral Nutrition therapy. Class time will include setting up and infusing TPN on the Curlin Medical 4000 Infusion Plus Pump. You will have hands-on time to become comfortable with the features of the pump, which includes programming, troubleshooting, and cleaning the pump.

 

Trach Tube Essentials (3hrs)

Learn how to safely and properly care for patients with a tracheotomy tube. Topics covered are; changing a trach tube, performing routine cares, different trach tube types (infant, pediatric, and adult), safety and infection control, concerns with speaking valves, heat-moisture exchangers and other trach tube accessories. There will be time for hands-on practice. Prerequisite: Auxiliary Home Care Equipment.

 

Ventilators: Beyond the Basics (3hrs)

This class is a review of equipment troubleshooting and emergency response for experienced home care staff. You will be expected to expertly and independently demonstrate assessment and troubleshooting skills in a simulated patient environment. Class is pass/fail and is limited to four participants. Prerequisite: Bilevel/CPAP Systems, the Pulmonetic and/or T-Bird Ventilator, and Trach Tube Essentials classes.
