Learn about the anatomy of the venous system, equipment, and safety and infection control practices used in Phlebotomy (the act of drawing a blood specimen). Class time includes demonstrations on drawing blood from a peripheral vein, central venous access devices, and capillary system (finger/heel stick). Complications that may result from a blood draw and how to handle them will also be discussed.

Objectives: Following the presentation the participant will be able to;

1. Identify safety and infectioncontrol practices with drawing blood.

2. Identify the anatomy of the venous system.

3. Identify equipment used for drawing blood.

4. Demonstrate drawing blood from a peripheral vein.

5. Demonstrate drawing blood from central venous access devices.

6. Demonstrate drawing blood from the capillary system (finger/heel stick).

7. Identify complications from a blood draw and troubleshooting techniques.
