Pediatric Services
In-home asthma management service improves life with every breath a child takes.
We help you understand pediatric asthma and develop the skills to manage the disease.
Creating and using your asthma action plan
PHS partners with doctors to give children and families the best asthma tools, treatments, and advice. We help you understand and manage asthma to avoid stays in the hospital. Our certified asthma educators meet with you at home to help you take control of your child’s disease.
We begin by looking at three areas:
Pulmonary review
This involves monitoring breath sounds and level of distress. We do spirometry and oximetry tests if ordered by your doctor.
Educational review
We help patients achieve best possible outcomes and avoid unnecessary trips to the emergency room. We ask how you best like to learn. We try to make our information easy to understand and useful for different cultures. We will teach you easy self-management skills.
Environmental review
We look for asthma risk factors in the home, such as cat or dog dander, dust mites, indoor mold, and secondhand smoke. Simple changes in the home can greatly improve the quality of life for a child with asthma.
Hands-on, how-to education helps you take control of pediatric asthma
We teach self-management skills to control asthma. We also help you and your child recognize early warning signs of an asthma attack and what to do to stop it. We monitor the seriousness of your child’s asthma symptoms and the efficiency of your child’s breathing.
Our home visits ensure families get answers to questions that develop after a visit to the doctor.
Home visits can include education on self-management skills such as:
- the impact of asthma on how the lungs work
- use of a peak flow meter to measure the speed a person can breathe out air
- the asthma action plan
- early warning signs
- use of an inhaler for taking asthma medicine and recognition of when an inhaler is empty
- use of a nebulizer for asthma medicine and practices to avoid lung infection
- differences between medicine that manages asthma and medicine that controls an asthma attack
- use of an auto-injector to take a life-saving single dose of medicine for a severe immediate allergic reaction (example: EpiPen®)
- identification and elimination of asthma triggers
- information on stop smoking programs
