  1. Identify the primary physiologic impact of positive inotropic medications such as milrinone.
  2. Identify the most common conditions for which patients are treated with milrinone in the home setting.
  3. Discuss common side effects of IV milrinone therapy.
  4. Describe vascular access device considerations for milrinone therapy, including catheter type and flushing protocols
  5. Discuss safety factors to consider for milrinone therapy, including the need for backup equipment, drug mixing, pump programming, and the need for an Emergency Action Plan.
  6. Describe the pre-admission process for an in-home milrinone patient.
  7. Discuss the need for patient assessment parameters, and give four examples of parameters.
  8. Identify the steps required for a milrinone bag change.
  9. Identify the three critical points to teach the caregiver for managing a milrinone patient in the home setting.

This four hour classroom program meets the State of Wisconsin DHS required 14 elements of Respiratory Care Service Training for licensed healthcare professional participants that are currently vent certified to be re-certified to care for a ventilator dependent patient in the home. Much of the class involves hands-on learning with ventilators, tubing circuits, tracheostomy tubes, and other pieces of equipment used in the home settings. Time will be allotted to set parameters on a ventilator, change an oxygen tank regulator, and perform a tracheostomy tube change on a mannequin. Letters of re-certification for both ADULT and PEDIATRIC will be awarded at the end of class. This re-certification is valid for two years, less one day, from the date of the class. If your current certification has lapsed, you must attend the full certification class, per requirements set forth by the State of Wisconsin.

Four (4) contact hours will be awarded upon completion of this class.

Objectives: Upon completion of this class you will be able to

1. Describe the differences between volume and pressure ventilation.

2. Identify the differences between Assist Control and SIMV modes of ventilation.

3. Identify three types of adventitious lung sounds.

4. Perform an emergency tracheostomy tube change.

5. Formulate a patient specific Emergency Action Plan.

6. Change an oxygen tank regulator from an empty to a full cylinder.

7. Demonstrate how to properly check and use a resuscitation bag.

8. Perform a safety check of emergency backup equipment in the home.

Ventilator Certification—2023 [Description] =>

This eight hour classroom program meets the State of Wisconsin DHS required 14 elements of Respiratory Care Service training for licensed healthcare professional participants to be certified to care for a ventilator dependent patient in the home. Much of the class involves hands-on learning with ventilators, tubing circuits, tracheostomy tubes, and other pieces of equipment used in the home settings. Time will be allotted for you to set parameters on a ventilator, change an oxygen tank regulator, and perform a tracheostomy tube change on a mannequin. Letters of completion for both ADULT and PEDIATRIC certification will be awarded at the end of class. This certification is valid for two years, less one day, from the date of the class.

Eight (8) contact hours will be awarded upon completion of this class.

If no session dates are listed please contact PHS to schedule a class date.

In this class you will learn the parts, tubing circuits, batteries, alarms, and settings of a Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) system and a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) system. Participants will experience hands-on learning time for assembling a tubing circuit, setting ordered parameters, and troubleshooting basic system operation.

Objectives: Following the presentation, you will be able to

1. Identify and operate the controls of a Bi-Level and CPAP system.

2. Assemble and test the correct tubing circuit.

3. Properly troubleshoot simulated problems with a Bi-Level and CPAP device.

4. Apply a Bi-Level and a CPAP system to a fictitious patient.

This class is an equipment troubleshooting and emergency response review for experienced home care staff. You will be expected to expertly and independently demonstrate assessment and troubleshooting skills in a simulated home environment. Much of the class involves hands-on review of ventilators, tubing circuits, tracheostomy tubes, and other pieces of equipment used in the home settings. Time will be allotted to set parameters on a ventilator, change an oxygen tank regulator, and perform a tracheostomy tube change on a mannequin.

Prerequisite: MINIMUM of 300 hours in-home ventilator care, Trach Tube Essentials class, AND Trilogy Ventilator, or Pulmonetic Ventilator class.

Objectives: Following the presentation, you will be able to

1. Expertly and independently demonstrate assessment and troubleshooting skills in a simulated patient environment.

2. Demonstrate the proper handling of an oxygen tank, including changing the regulator.

3. Explain emergency preparedness for fire, severe weather, and extended power failure.
