Inotropic Therapy (Online)

This interactive online course focuses on inotropic therapy in the home setting, including extra information for providing therapy for the pediatric patient. The course is designed to provide practical information and tools for the hands-on clinical nurse. Topics include:

  • Heart failure 
  • Inotropic therapy
  • Inotropic administration guidelines
  • Milrinone administration
  • Caring for a milrinone patient
  • Milrinone bag change
  • Care of the central venous access device
  • Patient and caregiver education

1.25 contact hours will be awarded to online class participants.

Criteria for successful completion to receive 1.25 contact hours:

  • Completion of all course modules
  • Achieving a passing score of at least 85% on the post-test
  • Completion and submission of evaluation form

Objectives: Upon completion of this training program the participant will be able to

  1. Identify the primary physiologic impact of positive inotropic medications.
  2. Discuss common side effects of inotropic therapy.
  3. Discuss the need for patient assessment parameters and give four examples of parameters.
  4. Describe vascular access device considerations for inotropic therapy, including catheter type and flushing protocols.
  5. Identify the three critical points to teach the caregiver for managing a milrinone patient in the home setting.
