Starting a Peripheral IV

Starting a Peripheral IV builds on foundational knowledge presented in PHS' IV Basics course. Completion of IV Basics is strongly recommended before taking this course.

In this Peripheral IV class you will learn or review how to safely and properly start a short peripheral IV catheter. Topics include

  • Peripheral venous anatomy
  • Vein selection
  • Vein distension techniques
  • Proper catheter selection
  • Venipuncture techniques
  • Peripheral IV catheter removal
  • Catheter securement
  • Flushing a short peripheral IV catheter
  • Potential complications
  • Patient education

There will be time for hands-on practice.

  • Two (2) contact hours will be awarded to all participants
  • Special large group class arrangements on request

Objectives: Upon completion of the presentation the participant will be able to

  1. Identify the anatomy of the venous system.
  2. Identify the proper veins to select for a peripheral IV.
  3. Select an appropriate peripheral IV catheter.
  4. Demonstrate proper venipuncture and removal techniques.
  5. Demonstrate dressing and securing a peripheral catheter.
  6. Identify complications related to short peripheral IV catheters and methods to prevent or reduce the risk of complications.
