PHS Study on the Allocation of Pediatric Home Care Nursing Hours Published in Home Healthcare Now
As a Pediatric Center of Excellence, we take seriously the responsibility of advancing the home healthcare community through research studies and publications. There is a paucity of research focused on the medically complex pediatric population and we aim to change that through research led by PHS employees.
Our most recent study, conducted by PHS Director of Nursing Lindsey Paitich, Chief Clinical Officer Judy Giel, Medical Director Dr. Roy Maynard, and Dr. Chris Luedemann, focuses on the adoption of a qualification tool (QT) to allocate home care nursing hours based on the medical complexity of a child to mitigate inequality in access to care and improve the patient and family experience.
Through the study, Minnesota home care nursing agencies and discharge planners use the QT to objectively and consistently recommend home care nursing hours based on medical complexity and need for skilled nursing interventions. It was also concluded that further refinement and acceptance of this QT could standardize eligibility requirements for pediatric nursing hours across state lines.
