PHS Asthma & Tobacco-Free Supporters Team Up with the Saint Paul Saints May 23rd

St. Paul, Minn. — In celebration of May Asthma Awareness Month, Pediatric Home Service and seven asthma and smoke-free organizations will co-sponsor the Saint Paul Saints game against the Fort Worth Cats at 7:05 p.m. this Friday, May 23, 2008. All eight organizations have joined forces to raise awareness about asthma and secondhand smoke. Through trivia, tabling, on-field activities and announcements they will spread the word about this chronic disease lung disease and that asthma can be controlled.

“Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States,” said Kay Kufahl, RRTNPS, RCP, AE-C, Managing Director of Chronic Disease and Certified Asthma Educator, “and it affects almost 400,000 Minnesotans and their families. The good news is that there are many steps we can take to manage and control this disease, and we appreciate the willingness of the Saint Paul Saints to help in the effort by declaring this game smoke-free.”

The state’s new Freedom to Breathe Act, which went into effect last October 1, protects Minnesotans in virtually all public indoor areas. Midway Stadium, where the Saints play at Energy Park Drive and Snelling Avenue, is an outdoor stadium and not required to be smoke-free.

The game starts at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium in Saint Paul. There is a $10 ticket package of a general admission ticket, coupon for hot dog and soda and a Saints baseball hat available to those with asthma and supporters of smoke-free and tobacco-free work. $5 general admission tickets are also available. In addition to Pediatric Home Service, sponsors of the event include: American Lung Association, Metro Asthma Coalition, Minnesota Department of Health, Partnership for a Smoke-Free Scott County, Smoke-Free Dakota County, Smoke-Free Washington County and Tobacco-Free Lavender Communities.
