Meet Joe’Von
Born: 2007
Diagnosis: Short bowel syndrome (SBS), esophageal reflux, noncompaction cardiomyopathy
Services used: Infusion nursing and pharmacy, home care nursing, specialized nutrition
CHALLENGE
Born at 23 weeks, Joe’Von couldn’t absorb nutrients and had a very strong aversion to food. Doctors believed he’d never be able to sustain himself.
Solution
PHS pharmacists and infusion nurses, dietitians, and home care nurses, partnered with health care professionals to begin weaning him off TPN and retrain his body to absorb nutrients.
Results
Joe’Von is gaining weight, growing, and experimenting with food by putting grapes in his mouth, though he’s not yet eating them. With the progress he’s making, it’s expected he will eventually eat on his own, and grow up like any other kid.
