Pediatric Home Service Announces Respiratory Therapy Scholarship Recipients

St. Paul, Minn.Pediatric Home Service is excited to announce its first Respiratory Therapy Scholarship recipients.

The scholarship is designed for students or recent graduates enrolled in respiratory therapy programs, through which they learn to care for people with heart and lung disorders. Pediatric Home Service received 16 applications and awarded three students scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.

“Education and philanthropy are a large part of our culture,” said Derek Hustvet, Pediatric Home Service Director of Respiratory Service. “We are always looking to hire the best of the best and we’re happy to support future respiratory therapists who could be caring for our patients following graduation. We are excited to know there is a great group of students about to enter the field.”

Josh Oye, a student at Concordia College of St. Paul, and Xe Yang, a student at St. Catherine University, each received $500 scholarships. The grand prize scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Lalita Jyoti, a student at North Dakota State University in Fargo.

The winners were chosen by a review committee that included Pediatric Home Service respiratory therapists and supervisors. The committee evaluated and selected candidates based on their transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays that described why they are interested in a career in respiratory therapy.

“The passion that these students have for the career path was clear and an integral part of our selection process. All of the candidates were very close, and we’re excited for the group we will have applying for next year’s scholarships,” said Hustvet.

Jyoti is enrolled in the Sanford Health Medical Center Respiratory Care Program through NDSUFargo and will graduate with her bachelor’s degree in respiratory care in December 2012. She plans to specialize in pediatric respiratory care and patient education.

“I can’t describe how thankful and blessed I feel to receive a scholarship from Pediatric Home Service. The scholarship has given me the opportunity to keep pursuing my dreams,” said Jyoti.
