Learn Infusion Basics at Home with Online Education

Since 2004, PHS has offered in-person classes at its office in Roseville, where incredibly knowledgeable and experienced instructors lead participants through lecture and hands on training in cares related to respiratory and infusion therapy. And while these on-site course options won’t be going anywhere, our staff have been working hard to expand our education opportunities to reach individuals who may not be able to attend in-person or would prefer to do the lecture portion in a self-led setting.

And with courses geared toward a number of clinical roles including nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, or even PCAs, an unmet need for education on to patients living at home with medical equipment is being addressed for a number of caregivers in the community.

“We wanted to be able to share the resources we’ve created, ensuring caregivers have access to top-of-the-line education on complex patient care,” said Rebecca Long, Director of Therapies and Education at PHS. “Not only do we want our staff to have the very best training, but we want to create access for all clinicians.”

Today, we’re thrilled to announce our first online course – IV Basics – is available through the Pediatric Home Service website.

How does the course work?

One of the biggest advantages of the PHS Online Learning program (beyond its accessibility to anyone, anywhere) is the quality of education it offers in a more relaxed setting. Participants will be led through a number of self-paced innovative modules designed to engage the learner on different topics that include learning through video, photos, graphics, animation, and more.

Various modules for the IV Basics classAt the beginning of the course, participants will see an overview of the modules they will complete throughout the duration of the class, clicking ‘launch’ to begin the first portion and moving forward from there. At the end of each module, participants will need to take a quiz on the information they just learned before being able to move on to the next section. Need to take a break mid-course? PHS University will remember where you left off and start up there when you begin again.

After the participant has completed all modules and passed all of the quizzes included in the course, they will be asked to fill out an evaluation before receiving their certificate stating their completion of the class and the contact hours they obtained.

Participants will then also have the option to schedule a time to come into the Roseville office for an in-classroom lab option where an instructor will be available for hands-on education.

Why take this course?

While many online courses tend to be very text-heavy – leaving the learner to absorb information only by reading – PHS recognized that the best learning often involves opportunities for interaction, and set out to make an online program that allows participants to do just that. Some features you’ll see in our courses:A 'what would you do' scenario to help participants learn

  • Downloadable resource pages
  • Drag & drop slides
  • Clickable word definitions
  • Hypothetical “what would you do” scenarios

Another benefit we wanted to offer participants is the option to either schedule or forego hands-on instruction at our office. This gives the learner a lot more flexibility in terms of choosing when they want to learn the information and try it in person, and also provides an opportunity for learners out of the area to still benefit from the lecture information without needing to travel to receive contact hours.

What if I have questions?

If you run into any issues or concerns while registering for or taking a PHS Online Learning class, don’t hesitate to email us at PHSUniversity@pediatrichomeservice.com, and someone will respond to you within one business day. We can’t wait to see you online and in the classroom!
