Know the Nurses: Katie Sorum

If you have a private duty nurse in your home, you already know what an important part of your life they become. Today in Know the Nurses, we’re introducing you to one of our private duty nurses, Katie Sorum, RN, BSN, who has been with PHS since June 2013. We already know these nurses provide comprehensive, round-the-clock care for patients in their homes every day, but here are a few fun facts about Katie you might not know.

  • I grew up in Marshall, MN (Home of Schwan’s ice cream!) with my parents, younger sister, and two dogs.
  • I attended nursing school at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD where I obtained my BSN. Go Jacks!
  • I moved to Minneapolis last May to work for PHS and pursue my dream of becoming a Pediatric Nurse.
  • My favorite sport is baseball and I am a HUGE Minnesota Twins fan. I love going to games at Target Field!
  • I met my boyfriend Mat in college at SDSU and we have dated for the past 3 ½ years.
  • IMG_3844I enjoy traveling. In March, Mat and I went to Fort Myers, FL to watch spring training games for the MN Twins.
  • I am the first RN in my family!
  • I became a nurse to follow my passion of caring for others. Every day as a nurse is different and a challenge but helping to make a difference even if it is little in a patient’s life makes what I do every day worth it!
  •  I love country music and going to concerts! A couple of my favorites have been Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan.
  • IMG_1417During high school and college I worked as a nanny and as a server at a golf club.
  • My favorite time of year is summer! If I could spend every day at the lake I would.
  • On days off I like baking and working on DIY projects. I find my inspiration for recipes and crafts on Pinterest (which I hate to admit I visit daily…)
  • I enjoy photography. It’s my newest hobby and I love learning how to use my Canon camera.
  • IMG_2535I also love playing softball, biking, rollerblading, hiking, trying new restaurants in the cities, and spending time with family and friends.
  • Someday I want to travel and be a volunteer nurse on a medical mission!
  • Being a pediatric nurse is the greatest! The kids laughs, smiles, and strength to never give up fuels my passion for being the best nurse I can be!
